About Kevin Thomas

Kevin was born in British colonial Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), in 1950. He spent much of his boyhood in the remote Sabi Valley where the wild environs would have an indelible effect on his life and ultimate career path.

In 1967 at age 17, and after leaving Umtali Boys High School, he joined the Rhodesian Department of National Parks & Wildlife Management, under their two year cadet ranger training scheme and ultimately served as a game ranger for close on six years, three years of which were spent in the remote Zambezi Valley.

During this time he met his wife, Brenda, and after resigning from the department they ventured into a short lived safari operation, however due to the escalating Rhodesian bush war, forcing the business into closure, he decided to join the regular Rhodesian Army. As fate would have it, he ended up as one of the founder members of the Rhodesian Army's Selous Scouts, a formidable counter-insurgency unit.

After five years regular Special Forces service, he departed the army in mid-1979 and once more turned to professional hunting and wildlife management in South Africa and Zimbabwe. In January 2004 and due to a slowing down in safari client flow he joined Erinys Iraq, where he served for two years as a Security Escort Team project lead.

Tracking the Memory is Kevin's second book, following on the success of his first book Shadows in an African Twilight.

Kevin is also an accomplished hunting writer and writes regularly for South Africa's
Magnum Magazine and Sporting Rifle in the UK, he has also previously written for African Hunter magazine, and Successful Hunter. Writing aside, Kevin is still fully committed to safari in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and also enjoys wildlife art and photography.

About Us

We invite you to come and share a special piece of Africa with us. Its wildlife, its mysteries, and the nostalgic winds that blow over this continent, draw one closer to the calls of Africa. Man has been drawn towards its wildlife and its legends for centuries.

In Africa everything will awe you, however we believe the safari bug will influence you the most. Africa works to it’s own time. Hunting is only one aspect of your adventure in Africa, your fond memories, the campfire stories, and the trophies you take home will remain etched forever in your memory. You will yearn to return to Africa and each time you return you will take another life long memory with you.

We want to share our passion for Africa with you. When you’ve acquired a taste for the dust, or the scent of our first rain, you will be hooked for life on Africa.

Truly said -"trophies are not dead animals, but living memories. Trophies serve not only as proof of opportunity seized, but they call up the fondest of memories of daring, hardship, good friends and the smell of wood smoke from a campfire".

Classic Eastern Cape

Kevin Thomas Safaris has access to some of the best hunting areas in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. All of our hunting areas have abundant game populations, a spectacular variety, and excellent trophy quality, important too, for the visiting sport hunter-is the fact that South Africa is easy to access and hunter friendly. In the Eastern Cape’s dense valley bushveld, we hunt species such as the challenging East Cape kudu, shy but noble bushbuck, warthog, blue wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra, impala, and diminutive blue duiker. In the high mountain elevations the elusive Vaal rhebok, and the mountain reedbuck.

You will be hosted by one of our Professional Hunter’s ,who will entertain you, and share their intimate knowledge of the area, its wildlife and constantly ensure your safari is of top quality.

Our teams of Professional Hunters, trackers, skinners and camp staff will take pride in looking after you during your safari duration. General Information

DURATION OF SAFARI

Whilst the ideal safari duration is deemed to be 10 or 14days, this to ensure a 100%success rate on a wide range of species, a safari of 5 or 7 day duration is perfectly acceptable. As has been previously mentioned in our introduction, we will also tailor safaris to your specific needs. In the event of clients wanting to hunt a full spectrum of South African species, then the duration should be of at least 16 days duration. All our safaris are carefully planned to meet the exact requirements of each individual client. There is no specific hunting season although April to October is the best time.

HEALTH PRECAUTIONS

All of our South African hunting venues are malaria and bilharzia free. Excellent modern medical facilities are within easy reach of any area to be hunted. In addition, our Professional Hunters all carry a comprehensive medical kit in their vehicles. Clients are however requested to bring with the many personal medication that they may require.

CAMPS AND AREAS

Kevin Thomas Safaris make use of concession areas that afford our clientele the best byway of accommodations, with our camps and lodges having all the up market facilities one would expect on a modern era safari. Rooms are en suite, on mainline 220V power and comfortable, and the lodges we use boastful bar facilities and superb traditional home cooked cuisine enjoyed with a selection of superior quality South African wines. Due to our camps and lodges being situated in spectacular surrounds, where non-hunters can relax totally in the friendly ambiance, we encourage family groups and couples to join us on safari. The accommodations we use on the Indian Ocean coast line boast stunning sea views, and are close to safe beaches and up market shopping malls.

FIREARMS

Kevin Thomas Safaris strongly recommend that clients bring their own rifles with them, which they are comfortable and familiar with. However, we appreciate that in this day and age of heightened air travel security the transportation of firearms may be problematic, thus we do have firearms for hire for a nominal fee of US $20.00 per day. For our smaller species a .243 is ideal, whilst anything from .270 through .375 will be adequate for virtually all of our plains game species.

TRAVEL & VISA REQUIREMENTS

Clients are requested to check with their Travel Agents as to the standing on Visa requirements with regards their Passports of domicile at time of intended entry into South Africa. Kevin Thomas Safaris recommends that clients route through OR Tambo International (Johannesburg), then onwards to Port Elizabeth airport which is our preferred meet & greet point in the Eastern Cape (approx1hour40minutesfromJohannesburg).

INSURANCE

Whilst all possible precautions will be taken to protect you against injury, sickness, or other loss, safari is not without its dangers. We can accept no liability with this regard. To that end, Kevin Thomas Safaris would require that you arrange your own personal, medical, hunting and all risk and travel insurance prior to your safari.

WEATHER & CLOTHING

Our winters are cold with limited snowfalls in certain Eastern Cape areas. Evenings and early mornings can be particularly cold with day time temperatures normally starting to warm up from about 09.00hrs. Warm windproof jackets and sweaters are recommended. Clothing should be of a non-reflective neutral color and well worn in string laced hiking boots with thick woolen socks, are the most ideal. Gloves too, are recommended and a soft brimmed hat or cap. Your laundry is done on a daily basis and returned to your rooms neatly pressed.

PAYMENT

A deposit of 40%of the total daily rate is required in order to confirm and secure your booking. The balance is payable upon completion of your safari, using travelers checks, a bank guaranteed check or cash. Kevin Thomas Safaris do not have a credit card facility.

Tracking the Memory is primarily a collection of informative and personal stories about the different experiences of hunting. It is also the culmination of a boyhood enterprise of exploration and discovery that began on a farm in the Chipinga area of British colonial Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) during the mid-1950s, and continued along the banks of the majestic Sabi River, and lives to this day 55 years on as a lifetime career and passion of the author.

Kevin Thomas is first a professional hunter but thankfully he is also a writer, and as such we have this collection of firsthand accounts of what it is like to straddle both the romantic, adventurous side of hunting and the modern commercial aspect of an often controversial industry.

Hunting is now a business but we must always remember it was once a way of life.

Kevin's First Book

They are still in Print and available

Game Ranger, Special Force Soldier, Professional Hunter and Personal Security Officer – Shadows in an African Twilight is a collection of fascinating stories about a life of adventure spread across nearly four decades in Africa and culminating in Iraq.

Many of the stories are not for the squeamish and tell of the aberrant behavior of man-eating lions and killer crocodiles, stories of courageous Rhodesian game rangers who while fighting to preserve the wildlife of a beautiful country were also fighting against brutal terrorist forces.

The author also relates some of his experiences as a pseudo counter-terrorist operator in the elite Selous Scouts during the Rhodesian Bush War and covers many of his experiences as a professional hunter in the exciting world of African safari.

Having also served in the previous South African era ‘black homeland’ of Ciskei he offers an often humorous insight into life during the wayward period.

This exciting book of high adventure ends with a discerning look into what it is like to work in war-torn Iraq in the specialized field of Security Escort Teams.

"When the vessel upended, the hippo burst onto the surface and as I toppled backwards into the river, my last glimpse was of Tjoi falling onto the hippo's exposed head, I then disappeared beneath the surface."

Kevin Thomas was born in Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia, in 1950. He grew up in the remote Sabi Valley where the wild environs would have an indelible effect on the rest of his life.

Upon leaving school he joined the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management where he served as a game ranger for close to six years, some of which were spent in the Zambezi Valley.

During this time he met his wife, Brenda, and due to the escalating bush war, and following a short-lived safari venture, decided to join the regular Rhodesian Army. As fate would have it, he ended up as one of the founder members of the Rhodesian Army's Selous Scouts, a formidable counter-insurgency unit.

When his career as a young soldier came to a controversial end he again took up the pastime of professional hunting and wildlife management in South Africa and Zimbabwe. More recently he worked in Iraq for two years as a Security Escort Team project lead. This is his first book.

Kevin is an accomplished hunting writer and for more than a decade now, has been a regular feature writer for African Hunter magazine. His hunting articles have also appeared in Successful Hunter.

Shooting in Africa

When you arrive at Johannesburg International Airport, do not be caught up in the fear created by the press. Spend a few days there, visit Rowland Ward where each visitor is treated with great care and respect by Richard Flack. There are many great markets in the area. Scroll down and see the Nkanga Lodge, it is absolutely First Class, they will pick you up at the Airport and take you to their exquisite Lodge which is very close to the Airport and quite secure including a locked gun vault, Jane and her family are also Hunters. They will contact Vanitha owner of She Cab who will transport you anywhere you wish and if you do not know where you wish to go, just tell her what you like and you will get there and back in complete safety. Vanitha knows the area as I know Benton. Rest up for a day or two, then Victor or Jaco will pick you up in the morning for your trip to Kirabo, you will be zoned in after the trip, adjusted to the time difference and after a very reasonable and pleasant ride to Kirabo, you will unpack, have lunch and begin the experience of a lifetime. In fact we returned to Nkanga Lodge the day before flying our so that we are able to get all of our ducks in a row. It also allows you to say good bye to Jane, her family and perhaps one last visit to a Market with Vanitha to pick up that last ironwood carving. When they say you "arrive as a guest and leave as a friend" it is absolutely true.
